How Kandji Updates Work

How Kandji Updates Work

Kandji downloads needed updates prior to installing them, sometimes days ahead!

These updates "sit there" until they are manually or automatically installed. If updates are delayed beyond their install deadline, you will need to restart the computer and allow it to check in with the Kandji Server in order for them to install properly.

Kandji recommends restarting every few days, and especially if an update seems "stuck".

If updates appear to be "looping", coming up every few minutes with a countdown it means the downloaded update is not able to install and you need to restart your Mac to free up built up cache. Once restarted, most updates will install properly. On occasion you may need to restart more than once, and attempt the update again after a few minutes.

Apps need to be closed before they can be updated.

Kandji is able to close most apps for you, but not all. Please pay attention to any messages or popups you see during a Kandji update, you may be missing messages asking you to save work and/or  quit the app. These can prevent the update from installing and cause an "update loop".
  1. When restarting to clear an "update loop", uncheck the box for "reopen windows when logging back in", this will prevent the apps that need updating from re-opening and will stop the "update loop".

Some OS updates get "stuck in a restart loop" where the update fails and force restarts your machine (sometimes repeatedly).

To stop this loop all you have to do is restart your Mac and try again. If the OS install still fails, you may need to update your Mac via the Software Update System Setting.
  1. In macOS Ventura go to System Settings>General>Software Update and let it check in with the Apple server. It will indicate whether or not there are updates to install.
  2. If neither Kandji or Apple System Settings find an update and you know there is one, you may need to restart and try updating via Software Update again.
  3. Restart, wait 15-30 minutes to let Apple and Kandji servers sync before updates come thru as they should. A lot depends on Internet access and speed.
  4. OS Updates require the computer to be connected to Power. If the battery is at 50% or lower, the update installer will quit. Best practice for updates is to plug it in... If you see a message that the update failed, make sure it's plugged in and connected to Internet, restart the computer and try installing the update again.
If updates to Apps or OS fail to install after following these steps please alert us so we can fix and/or troubleshoot the issue.
